Ahoy Their Mate! New England's Tall Ships Are Ready To Set Sail With Your Youth
On November 1st 2005, if you had been lucky enough to be out at sea off the New England coast you might have caught a glimpse of the rainbow shining about the 'Stavros S Niarchos' Tall Ship.
Better yet, if you had been really lucky, you would have been one of the kids sailing that ship.

United Airlines Provides First Class Service in Economy For Humans & Pets
Last Tuesday, after traveling from the north of Sweden to Stockholm, to New Jersey, to Maine, the King Fredel clan was only looking forward to our final two flights from New Hampshire to Oakland because it meant we were on our way home to San Francisco, California. From our property in Southern Maine, it took us an hour-and-a-half to get to Manchester, New Hampshire's airport. With golf clubs, two bags a piece, a kennel and a Golden Retriever to check, needless to say, we were not happy when we learned that United Airlines had changed the type of plane in which we would be flying. As a result, their smaller plane would not be able to accommodate our seventy-pound pup and kennel.
This story, however, does have a happy ending.
But first ...
An Even Worse Nightmare
Last summer, the four of us flew from Oakland to Boston on JetBlue for $109 a piece, each way. Our dog, Dakota, on the other hand, cost $587 one-way via USAir. Upon her return home, separate from us, USAir literally lost our dog. There was no record of her in the computer. They simply could not find her. And when I called Philadelphia to find out if she for sure made her connection, I got the following response:
Lady, we ship hundreds of packages and pieces of cargo a day from here. We can't expect to be able to keep track of every one.
This was not an important document I was looking for. This was my Golden Retriever puppy, a dog we love so much we're willing to pay beaucoup bucks to get her across country, so she can enjoy every summer in Maine with us.
Never mind that Federal Express and DHL can successfully get a package from one end of the country 99.9% of the time without losing it.
Why then was USAir Cargo not able to provide the same kind of service shipping a live animal? We will never know.
After Tim spent three hours at the airport waiting for flight upon flight to come in, hoping Dakota would be on it, we finally got our pup home safe and sound. Given our extremely frustrating experience, we did not hesitate to be interviewed live by Animals Aloud radio show host Deirdre Kennedy last fall. Deirdre wanted to share our frustrating story with her listeners, and we were happy to tell it.
The good news is that there is another carrier in the country that provides better service than USAir did last summer. And that is United Airlines.
Last Tuesday, sitting from my economy seat, both my family of four and our five year-old pup below received first class service - thanks to the agent in Manchester, Ronnie Kerr and the "Captain of our Ship".

American Idol Live Tour 2005 in Manchester New Hampshire: Bo Rocks & Then Rolls His Ankle
On Sunday, July 30th 2005, Manchester New Hampshire was the place to be if you were a 2005 American Idol Season Four fan. Bo Bice rocked the house. He then rolled his ankle, but kept on singing. Later, he found out he had actually broken his foot, twisted his ankle and pulled a muscle. Despite his fall, there were no other contestants who rose to the occasion the way Bo did. We would have been happy just to see... more

Winning Super Bowl XXXIX 2005 Commercials: Anheuser Busch 'Hero Salute' Ad Scores A 10!
Super Bowl Sunday in America is the closest thing to a national holiday without the official designation. On February 6th 2005, ninety million people tuned in to watch the New England Patriots beat the Philadelphia Eagles. Most watching might claim to be die-hard football fans. Some admit to having tuned in to the 39th Super Bowl just to watch the half-time show and commercials. It was one day that the TiVo fast forward button rarely got used. Companies paid... more

City of Boston U.S. Marines Corp Charity: Parking Tickets Traded for Toys for Tots
I loved living in Boston. But I absolutely hated getting parking tickets. Who doesn't? This holiday season, those who live in Beantown, or Genetown, as we dubbed the Massachusetts biotech-rich city, had less to rant and rave about last week if they got a ticket. Parking violators who were issued a ticket on December 1st, 2nd or 3rd, were instead allowed to pay their tickets with holiday toys. This new form of payment was a welcome gift for the... more

Schilling Sutures St. Louis In Game 2: Red Sox 6 - Cardinals 2
Curt Schilling On Sunday evening, Curt Schilling, with sutures holding together a dislocated tendon in his right ankle, pitched six strong innings to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 6-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. The Red Sox now lead the 2004 World Series, 2-0. Tonight, Schilling became the first man to win starts for three different teams in the World Series (Phillies, Diamondbacks, Red Sox). But it almost didn't happen. When Schilling woke up this morning... more

Red Sox Win Highest Scoring Opener In World Series History
Mark Bellhorn It took the Boston Red Sox eighteen years, but the club has notched another World Series victory by beating the St. Louis Cardinals, 11-9. Mark Bellhorn's two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning was the difference. The Red Sox won the highest scoring opener in World Series history despite making four errors. Bellhorn's homer hit the right-field foul pole at Boston's Fenway Park and scored Jason Varitek, who had reached on an error by Cardinals... more

Houston Astros vs. Boston Red Sox World Series To Decide The U.S. Presidency
Kerry (Boston) vs. Bush (Houston) Here's a suggestion: If the Houston Astros beats the St. Louis Cardinals tonight, let the World Series teams be a proxy for the presidential candidates. Boston can be the proxy for Senator John Kerry from Massachusetts while Houston becomes the proxy for President George W. Bush from Texas. The team that wins the World Series gets their guy into the White House. Could you imagine the excitement of the seventh game around that scenario?... more

The Boston Red Sox Nation Grand Slam It All The Way to The World Series
Behind Johnny Damon's grand slam and the Red Sox' four victories in-a-row, The Boston Red Sox Nation is heading to the World Series after beating the Yankees 10-3. I cried tonight when Boston won the American League Championship Series against the Yankees. Their four-in-a-row historic wins give them the opportunity to win The 2004 World Series. This Major League Baseball team, founded in 1887, last won the pennant in 1918. Tonight, I was overtaken with emotion because of what... more

Come To Papi: David Ortiz Wins Second Boston Marathon in One Day -- Red Sox 5 Yankees 4 in 14
In one day, the Boston Red Sox have won two games. No, it wasn't a doubleheader. Rather it was two Boston Marathons. At 1:22 a.m. this morning at Fenway Park, David "Papi" Ortiz hit a home run for the Red Sox in the twelfth inning to beat the Yankees, 6-4. Tonight, with the Red Sox' season still on the line, Ortiz again powered the Red Sox to a second straight extra-innings victory against the New York Yankees. In the longest... more

Red Sox Stay Alive On Ortiz's 12th Inning Home Run

At 1:22 a.m. Eastern Time, Fenway Park was filled to the brim with fans. After five hours and two seconds, the fans went home tonight saying it was worth every second! The Red Sox fans, who were praying and holding hands, had their prayers answered when Ortiz connected. He sent... more

Mounting Efforts to Inspire Viacom, CBS and MTV to Higher Standards
A Rugged Elegance Inspiration Network Exclusive by Jennifer King Viacom -- the corporate owner of CBS, the network that broadcast the Super Bowl and MTV, the entity which produced the Super Bowl Half-time show -- needs to take a serious look at itself in the mirror. While the game itself was a classic, the 12-minute Super Bowl Half-time show was downright disgraceful. During Jackson's number, male Cabaret dancers were dressed in red garter belts. The choreography between Jackson and... more

Tod Murphy: A Short-Order Revolutionary
New York Times: [Tod] Murphy -- who is himself a farmer -- started the Farmers Diner 18 months ago with a modest-seeming goal: to rely on local ingredients. Since then it has become something of a cause celebre, to the extent that a Formica-counter establishment that showcases patty melts and macaroni and cheese can. It is probably safe to say that it is the only business that both Gourmet and WorldWatch Institute devoted attention to last year. Such business... more

Holiday Spirit Transcends Winter Storm in Maine
With the "December Blizzard of '03" still raging, The Church on the Cape (in Cape Porpoise, Maine) decided they had to cancel church services this morning. However, several hearty souls were having breakfast at The Wayfarer, before the scheduled service time, and decided to proceed with a little service of their own, anyway. In addition to Pastor Ruth, Elaine, David, Judy, Bob, Scott and Karen, Eleanor & Arnold, Jim & Joan, Bill and Annie, Priscilla, Janice and Bill ended up... more

Burt's Bee's Founder for Governor of Maine!
Fast Company: By Loch Adamson Why has the cofounder and CEO of Burt's Bees just sold a controlling stake in her hugely successful company? She's got something more important to do. Roxanne Quimby just wants to go home. The cofounder and CEO of Burt's Bees lives in Maine but works in North Carolina, and she is weary of the 1,000-mile commute. Home is, after all, home. Specifically, home is a humble 1,200-square-foot house in Winter Harbor, three hours northeast... more

36 Hours: In Boston
New York Times: Historically, Boston looms large, but geographically it's just a bean of a town: 51 square miles, with more than 20 distinct neighborhoods crammed cheek by jowl, with pricey Beacon Hill and gritty Chinatown facing off across Boston Common, high-brow art museums just a stroll from Fenway Park. That rich density makes even a short walk rewarding, and the beginning of the end of the Central Artery-Tunnel Project (a k a the Big Dig) scheduled for completion... more
